Wolff Preparing to Sell Stake Valuing Mercedes F1 at £4.6 Billion

Team Principal Wolff has guided the Mercedes team to record-breaking achievements in Formula 1

Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to offload a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction estimates Mercedes at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – following the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to corporate structure in September.

Wolff, who holds a 33% stake of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a shareholding in the region of 5%.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and CEO if the sale goes through.

Ownership Breakdown

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos, who both hold a third of the company.

An official representative stated: "We are providing no comment on the matter. The governance of Mercedes F1 will remain unchanged, and each shareholder are fully committed to the ongoing success of the brand in F1."

Financial Growth

The deal signifies a substantial rise in worth of the Mercedes team since Ineos bought its stake for £208 million in 2022.

This surge reflects the growth in market values of F1 teams in the past few years due to the increasing appeal of the sport around the world.

This trend was evident with the success of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and has grossed over $630m (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

It is the actor's top-grossing film and the most successful sports movie to date.

Current Standings

The Mercedes team are second in the team standings, trailing McLaren Racing, with three races remaining this season.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 grands prix so far and is fourth in the individual standings after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team won a record eight straight team titles and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
