The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
